A TRIP TO THE ORIENT MUSEUM OF LISBON / UMA VIAGEM AO MUSEU DO ORIENTE DE LISBOA

Went to the Orient Museum yesterday in South Lisbon. My dad loves all about History and Japan holds a certain (immense) fascination to him. For some reason, I felt I needed some culture in my head so I suggested we all (me, dad, stepmother and her grandaughter) went to the museum. There was much talk about commitments, schedules and all that jazz, but, in the end, only my dad and I actually went.

I'm a big fan of oriental art as I find it so absolutely mesmerising and am left in awe with the detailing of jewellery, clothes and general objects. I always get stuck on thinking how, centuries ago, people created these things with their hands. No computers, no machines.

Anyway, I thought I would be killing you slowly if I included all of the 545 photos I took there. Instead, I decided I'd show you today one of my favourite parts. At first, I thought these were perfume bottles, but then found out they were snuff bottles. You can see a better explanation of this in a later picture, but just to resume: snuff bottles were used to store tobacco that was inhaled. Apparently, Portuguese people introduced tobacco to China around the middle of the 16th century. I thought this fact was really interesting. Keep going to find out more and to see the beautiful bottles (which I still believe would look amazing as perfume containers!)
